Statement A states that when x is divided by 2y the remainde is 3. When x is divided by y, the remainder may or may not be 3.

Let x be 11 and y be 2. Therefore, 2y will be 4. When 11 is divided by 4, remainder is 3. When 11 is divided by 2, remainder is 1.

On the contrary, if x is 11, y is 4 and 2y is 8, then when 11 is divided by 8 remainder is 3 and when 11 is divided by 4, remainder is 3. So, statement A does not help.

Statement B states when 2x is divided by y remainder is 4. Again this info is not sufficient to find the remainder when x is divided by y.

If x is 8 and y is 6, remainder is 2. Then 2x is 16 and y is 6, remainder will be 4.

Take another example, when x is 11 and y is 6, remainder of 2x by y i.e., 22 by 6 is 4. However, remainder of x by y i.e., 11 by 6 is 5. So, statement B also does not help.

Combining the two statements, nothing new emerges.

Answer is E.

The remainder when x is divided by y and when x is divided by 2y will be same only when the remainder is less than both y and 2y.
The remainder when x is divided by y and when 2x is divided by y only when twice the remainder when x is divided by y is less than y.
So, one cannot find the remainder when x is divided by y with the information given.

My answer is E too.
